About Neoteny

What is this site?

Neoteny is three things as of this writing:

-A reintroduction to WordPress, something I haven’t used since an old Web Design course

-A WIP portfolio of projects that I like enough to put on the Internet

-A blog designed to keep me writing, at least partially focused on the roadblocks and learning process of being an adult human. There will definitely also be reviews of media I’ve consumed lately, short bits of prose, and tabletop RPG notes (storyline ideas, character bios, notes on playing/running a campaign, etc). The goal is to put something on this blog at least once a month.

Why the name?

Neoteny is generally defined as the retention of juvenile features into adulthood. While the term is focused on the physical and physiological, I’m playing with the meaning to make a high-minded metaphor about manchildishness and bad habits. There are plenty of actions and mindsets I’d like to rectify as I finish college and move towards being gainfully employed; I just ended up choosing a pretty pretentious way of categorizing them. That’s the drawback of a communications background, I suppose. You end up encoding your language just to see if someone picks up on the joke.

Who are you?

I go by Hank. I’m a recent Professional and Technical Communication graduate from Montana, having spent much more time than necessary at college due to some lazy habits I was never punished for in primary school. This blog is kind of a continuing study, both in communication work and in making sure I don’t pick up those old, lazy habits again. I’ll get into some more detail about them as this blog progresses.

Anyway, welcome to Neoteny, a work-in-progress blog about being a work-in-progress.
