A Late Update

It’s been longer than anticipated since I was last here.

Welcome to habits I’m trying to break. I had ideas, then argued myself out of all of them and just let this space ride for a bit. That’s not the intent of this blog.

At this point, I’ve decided on Fridays as when I’d to try to consistently update. I’ve been spending these last couple weeks staying inside, grinding video games until I’ve become slightly depressed by the thought of playing yet more.

I’ll work on topics, probably starting with a review of one of the games I’ve spent too much time on over the past while, but then getting into some more lessons learned. It’ll be fun. I promise.

Until Friday.

A Piece of PTC History, and Why I’m Not an Engineer

Engineers can’t write.

-Me, originally circa 2015

Did I catch your attention? Good, because this is a long winded, ranty anecdote about how I came to that conclusion, and how it’s only been reinforced with time, collaborative work, and an unintentionally funny and motivating excerpt from a textbook. Ready to read a rant? Read on.

Game Review: DOOM Eternal

Warning: spoilers lie ahead, if DOOM lore is your thing for some reason.

I grew up on DOOM. Growing up in the late 90’s, my dad would an old DOS PC in his office to placate me while he did engineering work. Small child me memorized the directories and commands for plenty of games, but I always went back to DOOM and DOOM 2. When the 2016 reboot of the series finally hit shelves after some pretty tumultuous development, I was hyped. 2004’s DOOM 3 was fine, but was made in a different, spookier direction than what I was looking for. I wanted to RIP AND TEAR demons apart, and DOOM (2016) absolutely scratched that itch. The frenetic, fast-paced shooting action was everything I wanted in a DOOM game, and even after the satisfying campaign, there was plenty more game to play, thanks to multiplayer deathmatch and the excellent SnapMap map toolkit. Years later, DOOM Eternal became available, and I picked it up as soon as possible, ready for more fast-paced shooting action. How do I feel about Eternal, now that I’ve completed it? Read on.

I’m Not Dead, Just Bad At Finishing Things

Slow start, I know. I’ve really been lazing up this whole semi-quarantine scenario. The D&D character bio thing fell through, too, as I realized the very next week that I was going through a burnout phase. Understandable, in my opinion, seeing as I’ve been semi-regularly in some sort of game since the start of the last decade.

So that fell through, and I’m sorry. Tomorrow brings with it a review of DOOM: Eternal. I spent the last couple of days beating it, and judging by what I’ve seen elsewhere, my opinion of the game is different enough to be worth posting. There’s a book review laying in wait (see: in the drafts) too, it’s just been a bit trickier. After those posts, an anecdote from an old class that helped solidify my want to be in communications as a field.

Until then.

It’s Happening

Insert Ron Paul .gif here. After a couple of days of work, neoteny.moe is live. I’ll make a real post soon, but for now, I’m just glad everything seems to be working. Props to Tim over at yourock.fyi for putting the bug in my brain. If you’re a friend of mine and you see this: hello there! Thanks for checking the site out. If we haven’t met: hi! I’d definitely recommend checking out the about page to get an idea of what I’m attempting to do with this space. Provided I don’t find some new and exciting way to break everything, actual posts will start in the very near future. See you then.
